n     Nicholas started off his working life by accepting a sponsored training with NSSPL Singapore and was attached to the NOL, Singapore fleet of cargo ships plying the foreign going route. He is exposed to very advanced navigational systems such as the long range radars, dopplers, GPS, Satnav (satellite navigation systems), meteorological warning systems  and cargo monitoring systems. Proven to be a reliable officer with the ability to train cadets and sailors to meet or exceed service onboard ships. In pursuing for self improvement Nicholas has successfully completed the Asia Work’s (LP7) leadership program in Petaling Jaya.

n     Always picking up new skills to accommodate clients in the training/development environment and is able to work as a team player. In looking at ways to achieve the most productivity with less resource, he eventually ended up in areas of C, C++, shell scripting, Java and Linux. His certification includes the Sun Certified Java2 Programmer (SCJP), Linux Professional Institute (LPIC) level 1, along with being a certified trainer for LPI and Sun Java. For the last two years he has been invited to train-the-trainers (Linux) organised by the Human Resource Development (PSMB) of Malaysia. Nicholas is resourceful and dedicated to his career and any task at hand, and will provide constructive views as and when needed. Nicholas manages given projects with a coaching and peer-to-peer style to meet deadlines.

n     Duties of Third Officer and acting Second Officer (3 years).

n     Minimum on 8 hours navigational watches at sea. Maintenance of life saving and fire fighting apparatus. Berthing and unberthing of ship, including anchoring at Suez Canal. Experience in dry docking (Korea) and preparing vessel for delivery (Korea).

n     Manage cargo operations for container ships, oil tanker and bulk carrier at port and at sea. This includes usage of electronic systems to ensure stability of ship during cargo work and that all safety measures are adhered to and compliance with ISO-9002 and ISM.

n     Delivered effective training of cadet officers and sailors to achieve reduced manning of vessels.

Other short term projects

2002 – DagangNet (E-services provider): Worked alone in a consultancy/developer capacity with issues of automated delivering of files across X.400 protocol implemented with Java2 technology in a secure environment.

2001 – DagangNet (E-services provider): Worked alone in a consultancy capacity to identify and suggest ways to optimise performance and security of hybrid network on MS Windows 2000 and HP Unix.

2000 – Individual: Development of Chat applet (Java2 technology) and server for intranet use.

2000 – Individual: Led a team to setup Linux based machines for a vendor supplying machines to Universities. This includes setting up HP Unix client machines for CAD/CAM labs. Requirements include making the machines secure to prevent tampering by students for other purpose than the CAD/CAM.

1999 – AutoTrack (E-services provider): Designed Java applet (Java2 technology) for live feed of statistical figures. Implemented by clients eventually in Hong Kong.

1999 – Bid Direct (advertising): Led a group in development of survey collection and analysis application (MS Visual Basic).

1999 – APIIT (education): Developed secure intranet application for enquiry management (Java2 technology) for APIIT. This included major design patterns and coding standards as it is to be used as part of the B.Sc. final project documentation.

1997 – 1998 – Individuals (Cyber café): Setup and management of Linux server in Cyber cafés around Klang Valley. Servers were mainly to do auto dial up and provide shared internet access to client MS Windows 95 machines. This included monitoring of usage time.

1997 – APIIT: Optimisation and management of client data collection application (C++) while rewriting to implement better design for portability. Implementation of natural language processing algorithms in an object oriented design.
